Interior Environmental Quality: Studies That Support Design Solutions

Dr. Martin will demonstrate how integrating research into the design process can help improve the resulting design. Research about environmental quality issues—such as employee productivity, indoor air quality and ergonomics—as they relate to human behavior and a particular environment, can help enable facility managers and designers to make better decisions. InformeDesign® is a free website and knowledge management system that connects design practitioners to more than 1,900 Research Summaries from more than 175 scholarly journals that relate to design and human behavior. Dr. Martin will demonstrate how to use this valuable tool and utilize its searchable features.

Trench Warfare, Not Surgery: Implementing Sustainability in the Real World

Auden Schendler will recount his first-hand experience implementing sustainability as Executive Director of Community and Environmental Responsibility at Aspen Skiing Company, a green business pioneer and the first U.S. ski resort to receive ISO 14001 certification. Going green has become mainstream and every business in America is confronting the issue of climate change and sustainability. However, if sustainability was as quick, easy and profitable to implement as the media leads us to believe, Schendler says, it would have happened already. Instead, he equates the practices that will save the planet to trench warfare. In his seminar, Schendler will provide a realistic understanding of what working toward sustainability actually entails and share stories of success and failure based on his own experiences at ASC, a business that has already struggled with sustainability for a decade.
